Politicians Back Calls For Accountants To Be Professionally Qualified

Research by YouGov, commissioned by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) found 82% of MP's agreeing for advisors and agents and anyone delivering accountancy and tax services to be professionally qualified.
Unregulated high street accountants and tax advisors are providing advice and accountancy services to business owners, without having the necessary qualifications. Of all agent related complaints received by HMRC, two thirds are about unqualified accountants. This costs the taxpayer, not just because of indigent advice that could result in missing out on exemptions or reliefs, paying too much / too little tax, but also egregious avoidance, tax evasion and money laundering. Furthermore, errors and mistakes leave many taxpayers with large and unnecessary fines and penalties.
The AAT is campaigning for 'Change', to raise standards in the advice provided in the tax and accountancy market and to protect consumers, through their 'Accountable Campaign'.
